Following my ‘Keep active through Autumn’ post today we have a guest post by Vicky Rees owner of Pilates studios ‘Studio 21’ based in Yarm and Saltburn. Vicky trained in Pilates back in 2008, open her first studio 2 years later and has even worked with Middlesbrough Football Club. Following the success of her first studio where classes with Vicky often have a waiting list she opened her second studio in Saltburn. Throughout the pandemic and lockdowns Vicky continues to support her loyal clients by providing social distant classes and online sessions.

On the blog today Vicky shares her journey and her simple 5-minute pilates warm up to help keep your mind and body healthy over the colder months.

After trying one class at my local gym in 2007 I was hooked on Pilates, I knew straight away that I wanted to learn more and to become a teacher.  Which was a bit crazy really as I had no idea what I was doing!  A year later, in 2008, I trained with Body Control Pilates in London.  Body Control Pilates is well renowned for its comprehensive training and it took around a year to become fully qualified. At the time I was working full-time on a 5-year project for the North York Moors National Park, and when that came to an end in April 2010, I’d already made the decision to open my own studio in Yarm. It’s the 10-year anniversary this year which we haven’t been able to celebrate unfortunately, but we will, as soon as we can! In 2019 I decided to expand the business and open another studio in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, which has been my home for the past 7 years. Like most businesses we’ve been affected by the lockdown but have been able to run online classes when the studio has had to close.

I was born in July and I’m very much a summer person, I spend a lot of time outside walking in the woods and on the beach with my dog so I see the seasons changing and I try to adapt to fit in with them.  As the cold arrives I find, as many do, my motivation is harder to come by but Pilates is great for boosting your body and mind.

Here’s a 5-minute session to keep you warm and well this winter:

  1. Take 5 full breaths in and out through the nose before starting your session – the nasal passageways are designed to filter allergens and foreign bodies from entering the lungs. And as deep breathing can reduce the stress hormone cortisol, you’ll also give your immune system a boost.

  2. Roll downs while walking on the spot – a great full body warm up and gets the circulation going.

  3. Balance on each leg for 30 seconds whilst gently moving the rest of the body – ankle circles, knee bends, hip circles – nourishing and loosening the joints.
